Innovations in Brain Computer Interface can be Foreseen to have Great Potential

Sky has become the limit for innovations and developments regarding technology. After developing a digital world the innovations have further marched to merge it with physical realms. Though several types of research are still in their initial phases, however, very few technologies have been achieved to connect both worlds including the brain-computer interface.

The brain-computer interface is a computerized interactive platform or a way of direct communication between the brain and an external device. The brain imaging technologies are integrated with brain-computer interface systems to capture electrical signals sent by the human brain, to get an exact output desired by the user. A brain-computer interface can come out as a beneficial asset to understand and solve medical issues such as dementia, epilepsy, untreatable depression, and obesity along with helping people to communicate without sound and words.

Brain-computer interface carries huge potential, and therefore, the researchers and market players are investing in further developments in this field. The market is undergoing numerous activities including new strategies and product launches. Furthermore, the researchers as well are coming up with new studies based on the potential and developments of the brain-computer interface.

Some of the recent happenings the industry is witnessing

Research is leading towards advancements. Recently, research carried out by a group of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) has shown that the need for recalibration for brain-computer interfaces can be reduced with the help of machine learning. The research is based on Nature Biomedical Engineering to improve the stability of the brain-computer interface during its use. The research has been carried out to get a solution for the instability of the brain-computer interface while using it, as the signals picked up by the system vary over time. This loss of control leads the users to go through a recalibration session and reset the connection between mental commands. However, the process also requires a technician to handle the system. Following machine learning, the complete process can be easily conducted along with reducing the requirement of recalibration.

Other than this, new launches are thriving in the field. Recently, Nixon Labs, an (Electroencephalography) EEG technology-based application provider, launched a solution, Explorer, and neurofeedback system to be used in sectors including Medicine, Neuroscience, Engineering, and Information Technology. The solution assists to display brain wave frequency per channel in real-time. In addition, the data can also be captured for additional analysis. The Nixon Explorer is consist of an electroencephalography monitor adapted for portable EEG, and the Muse headset by Interaxon Inc. and assists in visualizing, recording, and analyzing brain activity.

Despite the Brain-computer interface being in its infancy, however, various technological developments in the field of human-machine sensing are leading the industrial growth. On the other hand, the applications of brain-computer interface technology in various fields are increasing demand for further developments.

A report published by AMR reveals that the global brain-computer interface market is projected to reach $3.85 billion by 2027. Furthermore, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a brain-computer interface can be foreseen to have great potential. Nevertheless, the increasing demand for brain-computer interfaces by small and mid-size enterprises and further technological advancements and research are anticipated to offer a plethora of opportunities soon.
